Memes & Mobility

We all know that the internet is a wonderful place where we can connect with just about anyone, anywhere in the world, within a matter of seconds. It allows us to stream films and tv shows, read about the latest news from whichever media outlet we want to trust, and to search the internet for any symptoms we have which will inevitably lead to WebMD and a panic attack. Throughout your online adventures, you may have stumbled across cat videos, dog shaming, and the “how do you pronounce that?” meme. So, let’s take a brief look into the ridiculousness that is meme culture and share a few prime examples as they relate to wireless mobility.

According to Wikipedia, a meme “is an idea, style or action which spreads, often as mimicry, from person to person via the internet, as with imitating the concept.” Thanks, Wikipedia. That clears it up. Really, it’s just a joke that spreads and is often remixed and mashed-up with other jokes to make a fresh joke. The website KnowYourMeme.com is a great resource to understand just how deep memes can become. Be warned, as is the theme with the internet, you will most likely spend more time there than you plan to.

The best way to demonstrate how memes work is to take a look at a few of quite possibly the least ridiculous examples (yes, least):

Conspiracy Keanu

KeanuSupermanKeanu Reeves has been the topic of numerous memes over the years. There’s Sad Keanu, Happy Keanu, Tai Chi Keanu, and even Sad Keanu in a Helmet. Conspiracy Keanu is one of the most popular, the result of a screenshot taken from the classic movie, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure.  The screenshot is then remixed by changing the overlying text, which is typically “paranoid conjectures and absurdly philosophical questions”.

Nokia

Even the Nokia 3310 has it’s own meme, which centers around the fact that is was the first “rugged” cell phone before “rugged” phones were even an option (and were not even that rugged). According to meme legend, this little device is responsible for massive sinkholes and can only be destroyed by throwing it into the fires of Mordor.

There are an unbelievable number of memes on the internet, many of which end up being relatable and thought-provoking despite their immature stereotype. If you’re looking to take a breather at work or find yourself waiting around on public transportation, perform a Google search for any of the memes below to laugh and pass the time.
