As we all know, technology advances very quickly. In the communications industry, we see this first-hand and observe how organizations both large and small adapt to these changes. Whether it is upgrading mobile devices, installing new phone systems, or implementing new procedures for growth, these changes can be challenging for the organization as a whole as well as the individuals within the organization. Considering how uncertain and difficult these changes can be, we wanted to highlight the organizations that we meet that have taken the steps to embrace change. This January, we want to shine a spotlight on the efforts of Nichols (formerly Nichols Display Group), a Trade Show Exhibit company located in Wheeling, IL.

We originally began working with Nichols in January of 2013 and since then have watched them cycle through some major changes. In addition to transferring their business to a new location, founders Bud and Peggy Nichols have taken the initiative to hire new personnel as well as bring in consultants to upgrade their website and introduce a wealth of new marketing materials.

While RAK was able to assist Nichols with the transfer of their communications to a new location in 2013, Nichols was still under contract with no feasible way to upgrade their systems due to vendor termination fees. With their contracts coming up for renewal in February, Nichols is finally able to address some of the issues that they have with their current communications systems.  For example, they have a need to increase their data speeds in order to properly support the graphic design file transfer protocols as they work with extremely large design files. In addition, they are currently using an outdated phone system which has become difficult and expensive to support.

Upon hearing about the the overall changes that Nichols has been implementing within their organization, RAK Consulting recommended a series of upgrades that would not only meet their current needs, but allow for their continued growth. As they have stayed open-minded throughout their evolution, Nichols welcomed these advancements knowing that they would not only save money, but would also increase their overall productivity while allowing for expansion.

Some of the communications changes implemented include an upgrade to their data circuit to support faster speeds as well as an upgrade to their phone system, switching from analog to hosted VoIP. This new hosted VoIP system means that not only will they reduce costs by removing local voice lines, but they will also reap a wealth of benefits including direct dial numbers for every line, extension dialing, conference bridges and chat, and CRM/contact integration with apps such as Salesforce, ACT, and Outlook. This new system also supports a modern mobile workforce, allowing personnel the ability to make and receive calls from their phone line whether they are in the office, or on a smartphone, tablet, or laptop in another location. Not only have they greeted all of this technology with open arms, but they have kept a positive attitude about the learning process.

While Nichols will be realizing the numerous benefits of their new communications solution and branding efforts for years to come, their real success is in how they have embraced change within their organization. We congratulate Nichols on their determination and open-minded nature, and wish them all the happiness and success as they continue to grow.
