Q. I’ve heard that “hotspots” enabled on smart phones can reduce my wireless costs. Is this true and if so how?

A. While hotspots can reduce wireless costs by $20 – $45/month compared to a conventional “aircard” , you have to be aware that not all hotspots are created equal.  This feature can be enabled on many phones, however, enabling it on certain carriers’ equipment can come with some limits such as accessing the Internet or sending an email while talking on the phone. After connecting to the mobile phone data network, the smartphone can distribute its Internet connection to several clients via a Wi-Fi connection. Any Wi-Fi-enabled computer or tablet can connect to it, and the real bonus is that the Wi-Fi router is inside your phone so there’s no extra equipment to carry with you and no other device to recharge. RAK Consulting can assist your organization in determining whether this would be a viable feature to utilize.
